Ancient Egyptians created a full line of makeup cosmetics
The makeup purpose has not changed since the Egyptians.
The ancient Egyptians were preoccupied by the cleanliness. That's why they used to be clean, to smell good and also to look good. Moreover, they were always searching methods to make them look good.
Even if it is hard to believe, they had a lot of cosmetic products which you can easily find in the cosmetic shops. For instance, they were delighted by those products that could help them recondition their skin, especially if they had problems like scars or stretch marks. Beside this kind of products, Egyptians also used perfumes, face creams, body oils and eye makeup cosmetics.

Because of their obsession to look good, they invented the mesdemet. This was compound of lead ore and copper. Even if it is not recommended to apply them on your face, they used to do their job. Egyptian women applied dark grey or black on their upper lids and lashes and green on their lower lids. Beside the fact it looked good, it was also used as a disinfectant.
The kohl was also very important in the history of makeup cosmetics. Egyptians composed it from ash, lead, copper ores, ochre, oxidized copper and burnt almonds. The result was a dark powder, called kohl that was applied around the eyes.
Not only women used to apply makeup. Men used makeup cosmetics too. They applied cosmetic cleansers after they were taking a bath. The cosmetic cleansers were made from animal or vegetable oil, perfume and powdered lime.
Later on, Greeks followed the Egyptians habitude. They also started to use makeup cosmetics.
Well, the Romans adopted the Egyptian makeup products too. But, unlike the Greeks and Egyptians who were using the makeup cosmetics to enhance their beauty, they were using them as aphrodisiacs.
Afterwards, the pale faces were the norm for a long time. The lower class who worked in the fields had dark and tanned skin. The higher class had white, pale skin. To obtain a nice and pale skin, they applied a white powder, compound of hydroxide, lead oxide and carbonate. Though, it was poisoner. That's why they later found a powder made of zinc oxide.
In the 20th century the first makeup salon has appeared. It was called Selfridges and it was made in London, in 1909.
